Basic Training Retreat (BTR) took place the second week of training as the incoming corps members prepare for their year of service. BTR is a three day retreat of intense training, orientation, and team building at West River Center in Maryland. New corps members were placed on their teams they will serve with the next year and learned various tools that will help them begin their work to change the world.
The corps members received a day of inspirational workshops led by City Year's Dean, Charlie Rose. Corps members sat through workshops on The Cycle of Oppression, Team-Building Challenges, learned about the State of the Site from Executive Director Jeff Franco, and got a chance to bond with fellow corps and staff.
BTR officially marks the start of the year for teams. Corps members find out what team they have been placed on for the year and begin to get to know their team members. These corps team will undergo further training for the rest of September so that they can be fully prepared to teach, administer, tutor, and mentor the youths they will be working with this year. Truly the beginning of the "corps experience", the year is underway and the corps can't wait for service!
