Simon says: What it means to be a leader

Our team sponsor  The Case Foundation will be highlighting the experiences of their team at Simon Elementary School on The Case Foundation Blog. Below is just a little taste....

Picture it, Simon Elementary School, where seven young leaders take on the challenge of improving the community by engaging in service and creating a positive school climate for the students. These seven were hand-picked and agreed to take on such a momentous challenge. Draped in their Red City Year jackets they go out to impact the community with their positive can-do attitudes and passion for service. Every morning at 8 a.m. they show up at Simon Elementary, fired up for a day of fulfilling service.....
My name is Corey Townsend and I am currently one of the seven young leaders at Simon. We are not here to change the world but to impact as many children as we can. Many of our students have behavior issues that we work to improve through tutoring, mentoring, and coaching. One of my students, let's call him Student X, had a bad attitude and work ethic. After a couple months of one-on-one tutoring with him and hours of counseling, he has learned to focus and be calm in certain situations. Student X has even improved in his test scores with the DC BAS and has moved up a skill level!

TIME's Annual National Service Cover Story Dedicated to Education

TIME magazine's annual "National Service" cover story issue will soon be on the stands. TIME has provided us with an advance look at the issue, which hits newsstands this weekend. Attached are pdfs of the cover story and related pieces.
The cover story is dedicated to improving public education. In the section on "How to volunteer" to help improve educational outcomes a number of organization's are listed with a descriptive paragraph, beginning with City Year. It reads:
If you’re a Recent High School Graduate ...You remember what school was like because you just lived through it. Use your skills to help kids get on track—and stay on track—to graduation. CITY YEAR City deploys high school graduates ages 17 to 24 for 10 months of full-time service at 20 U.S. locations. An Ameri-Corps program, City Year has 1,750 uniformed members who serve as mentors, tutors and school-program organizers. In return, they receive a biweekly stipend and money to help pay for college—plus the knowledge that they may have prevented a kid or two from dropping out.

Rick Stengel, managing editor of TIME Magazine and a City Year trustee, makes this "national service" cover story happen every year, and it is a tremendous act of civic leadership by Rick and TIME to do so.  City Year's Chief Strategy Officer AnnMaura Connolly did a great job providing background information and guidance to TIME on national service organizations doing important work in education.
It is exciting that TIME is putting the critical need to improve public education and the connection to national service on the cover. We will send an eblast about the cover story to our national eblast list of 25,000. As always, please make sure that everyone we work with and or want to engage is on our enews list...including your friends and relatives, who I am sure would want to get periodic updates on the work you are so passionately engaged in. It is simply to add your contacts to our enews list, just go to:  http://www.cityyear.org/enews-signup.cfm
This cover story reinforces what we already know, but can never be reminded of enough: our work to bring highly committed young people into the lives of students in high poverty schools as full time tutors, mentors and role models is essential, and we must do all we can to hone our impact and increase our scale.
Best,
Michael
