Yesterday morning, the City Year team at Stanton Elementary School and all of Stanton's 5th graders loaded up a bus and traveled all the way across DC to meet the LOS ANGELES LAKERS! The Lakers were in town to play the Wizards and meet President Obama (because they won the championship last year), and they decided they wanted to do some service while here in DC! They got in touch with CYDC, and mentioned that they wanted to put on a health and fitness clinic for some of our students.
We got to the Verizon Center in time to watch the last twenty minutes of their practice, and then they led all of the kids in a basketball clinic! They taught them some new moves and defensive skills--they even got to match up against Kobe Bryant!! Then, Coach Phil Jackson sat the kids down and talked to them about the importance of staying active and eating healthy foods. Lastly, we all took a bunch of pictures, and then loaded up the bus to head back to school. This was an incredible experience for everyone--all the players were really into it, and the kids had a great time!
