Meet Keisha!

Keisha H.
Corps Member serving at Stanton
Hometown: Washington DC

Education: BS in Psychology from Xavier University of LA

What team are you on and what do you do? I am on the Whole School Whole Child team. I am at Stanton Elementary and I am in Ms. Cook’s 3rd grade classroom. I am a tutor, role model, and mentor to the kids. I work 1-on-1 with the students as well as small groups when needed. For after care I am in Mrs. Campbell Pre-K classroom.

Why did you join City Year and why do you serve? I joined City Year to make a difference. While I was in school in New Orleans I tutored a 2nd grader in reading. He was really smart his only problem was that he didn’t want to apply himself. One day when he was doing a great job I told him that if he kept up the good work he could go to my college if he wanted or anywhere else that he chose. Another tutor laughed and said that he could never do that. I joined City Year so that the kids don’t feel that way I want them to feel like anything they put their mind to they can do.

What are you most excited about this year? I am most excited about being home for this year making a difference in the community that helped me become who I am today.

What are you most nervous about this year? I am most nervous about actually making a difference. I know that it is said that we do but I don’t know if I actually will. I will try my hardest to make a difference in the lives of others.

What is something most people don’t know about you and wouldn’t guess? When I was little my goal in life was to become a figure skating-gymnast who went to the Olympics for swimming and to be a pediatrician.
