City Year Washington, DC Welcome the New Corps!

Last Monday we welcomed in our 2010-2011 corps – all 140 of them! This diverse group on 17-24 year olds has decided to give 1 year of lives to help change the world – one student and one community at a time. The staff here has been working all summer to prepare, and we glad that they have finally arrived.

So what does this group look like:

Ø      45% are Male; 55% are Female

Ø      57% of them have graduated from college; 20% of them have some college; 22% have graduated from high school, and we have 1 corps member is a GED candidate

Ø      41% are “local” from DC, Maryland, and Virginia

Ø      31 – the number of states represented in our corps

Ø      38% identify as African American; 37% identify as Caucasian; 6% as Asian; 4% as Latino and 16% as other

Ø      100% of them are in for the ride of their lives!

These 140 idealistic young people will spend the next month or so training, and getting ready to go into schools and into the community. Please stay tuned and we’ll keep you up-to-date on their journey.
